Style Share return: Polo tie

After a bit of a lull, I've had a load of Style Share returns lately, including the following entry. This one goes back a couple months, to the fair month of September.

Polo tie

This classic Polo tie was claimed by Prinz Ulrich von Boffke, who runs a couple interesting niche blogs of his own, and who layered this one up right.

On a lovely fall day, the tie absolutely pops with a dark suit, a contrast collar shirt, and a super rad tweed overcoat. I would also be remiss if I didn't mention that I was really jealous of his leather briefcase bag.

Thanks again, PUvB, for your photos, and for everyone else who has played along and participated in my little attempt at spreading some style.

  1. Looking good, but not quite great. It seems your pants are puddling, and your jacket seems to be pulling at the button, but maybe that's because of the heavy briefcase. The colors are very nice, though I personally prefer a lighter shade of blue for shirts (but the contrast collar makes it work far better than a matching one would).

Quibbles, really--you look a million times better than most everyone else.

  2. Yes, I noticed the pants after the photo was taken, and I had changed into toddler-proof clothes. I needed to hitch them up again after walking home from campus. Certainly an argument for suspenders/braces, and the thought has occurred to me that perhaps a medium break in the pants is better than a full break.

Yes, everything was pulled a bit out of kilter by the briefcase and the overcoat. Usually, the suit jacket drapes more nicely than in this picture, but I was horribly remiss in getting a style share picture back to Mr. Midwester, showing the necktie in actual use and wanted to take care of that before another two months had elapsed.

Finally, you are correct. I seriously doubt if any of my sloppy professor colleagues in ratty khakis, wrinkled shirts, and beaten up casual shoes would notice these finer points. Still, the things you note are worth addressing to tune up the look just a bit more.

    Best Regards,

    Ulrich von B.

  3. I was worried that what I wrote would be taken poorly; I'm so glad that you didn't get steamed. Thank you for taking my criticism so nicely.

I have slowly started to transition to suspenders; at the very least, they seem best for suits, though I have dreams of suspending all my nice trousers some day.

Thank you for not using the shoulder strap; I hate how they twist suits completely out of shape.

I forgot to mention how much I like the nice, big cuffs on your pants. ADG of Maximinimus fame insists on 2" or nothing. Even on short men, 2" looks good.

    Keep the faith!

  4. Not at all! I figure one can always learn more about classic style and fine-tune it as more knowledge is gained. Yep, I like cuffs on dress pants too and am gradually having them added to my non-cuffed pants. They certainly help the legs to drape better.

Agreed, a shoulder strap and a heavy briefcase will ruin a jacket or sport coat over time, to say nothing of (gulp) a bookpack with two shoulder straps. We have one other professor on campus who dresses sharply in nice odd jacket/dress pants combos with good shoes and bowties. Sadly, the heavily loaded Jansport bookpack he insists on using kills any attempt at pulling off a more sophisticated look.

    Best Regards,

    Ulrich von B.
